A sustainable world where all communities have culturally-centered spaces in which to live and thrive
Our communities have been functioning at a deficit for centuries. Therefore we understand that it will take a great deal of effort to reclaim the physical, emotional, and financial resources needed for us to thrive. We don’t hide from challenges and difficulty; rather we embrace long hours and the fatigue that come with it with acceptance and peace of mind. We rest when necessary, and our deep commitment to pouring life back into our communities inspires us to meet every challenge we face with the energy needed to overcome until we are victorious.
We pride ourselves in having our words match the real internal mental and community challenges we face, as well as the real external struggles on our path to liberation. We aim to be clear and precise in our language, and are not afraid to speak difficult truths when necessary regardless of what’s trendy or popular. We don’t hide our flaws and shortcomings, and know that ascribing accurate language to what we see enables us transcend our collective shortcomings.
We gauge our worth by how well we can live and work in groups, sharpening our habits as we transform our character on the path towards truth, justice, balance, and harmony. We aim to address conflicts and inconsistencies when they are small. We avoid making political and strategic statements for short-term gain if those statements are not reflective of our true organizational habits and culture.
The pathway towards living freely in culturally centered spaces requires we embrace cooperation in all of its forms on a deep level. While cooperation is a natural part of human society, most of us come from histories in which pain, trauma, and tragedy have impaired our ability to work together at the depth required for true community-level change. As such, we hold that working together is a learning process, and one in which we encourage viewing each other through the lens of a healer. The following are goals that we have and use to measure our progress towards being members of a fully cooperative community.
Participatory Governance:
People involved in and touched by our organization will be a part of the decisions that impact them. We are deeply committed to operating by the cooperative principles of umoja and ujima, essential pillars to building a world where fully integrated communities work together to achieve mutually beneficial goals.
